The system load is the number of processes currently running or waiting to be run on the CPUs.

If you have 8 CPUs and the system load average is 4.47, that means that on average you have 4.4 tasks currently running on your CPUs. Since you have 8 CPUs your system can support this and shouldn't slow down.

If you have 2 CPUs and the system load average is 6.8 that means that you have nearly 7 tasks that are running in parllel, your 2 CPUs aren't enough. Time to upgrade !
