Pulse audio has a specific configuration screen that lets you capture from the desktop. You can use Pulse on top of Alsa.

  1. Install PulsAudio and ensure it is running (it is already installed on most distros)
  2. Install pavucontrol (PulseAudio Volume Control) (also installed on most distros)
  3. Run pavucontrol, go to the recording tab and select a Monitor entry

In your recording software, you can now record from the pulse device. In audacity, click on the vu meter (1) to monitor audio input, then select pulse input device (3). (2) is the output device, and is not relevant for recording audio.
