Possible problems :

  • Port 53 is filtered : check that no firewall is blocking port 53 both UDP and TCP traffic (yep, some of the DNS protocol relies on TCP too). If the request works locally but not remotely then this might be the issue.
  • Your DNS server isn't running : check that bind / Active Directory or what have you is running
  • The IP address associated with your NS is wrong in the parent zone : the parent zone is associating your own domain name with an IP address that you don't own / that doesn't run your DNS server (check with your registrar).
